Announcements

Northern Kentucky University becomes the nation's newest ASTA National String Project Site and is awarded the prestigious National String Project Consortium Grant!!

Northern Kentucky University Music Preparatory is awarded the prestige of an ASTA National String Project, a unique program that introduces stringed instrument playing to grade school children and affords music-degree undergraduates opportunities for hands-on classroom teaching experiences.

Under the guidance of a Master Teacher, a seasoned, experienced public school music teacher, undergraduate students teach children in the community how to read music and play a stringed instrument, such as the violin, viola, cello or bass. In the process, children develop good work habits and improve their ability to collaborate and cooperate in groups.

Currently, twenty-four universities and colleges nationwide offer the ASTA National String Project to grade-schoolers in their communities. The program is designed to eliminate the long-term shortage of string music teachers in the United States while expanding the availability and accessibility of music education to young children. Utilizing college students in supervised teaching roles allows Northern Kentucky University Music Prep to offer string music instruction at substantially reduced fees, making the program accessible to all families in the community who wish to participate. Applications for student enrollment will be available in the coming months.

Through hands-on teaching experiences with children in the community who enroll in the program, undergraduate student teachers become better skilled in managing a classroom and teaching small children. At the same time, parents within the community benefit from an affordable opportunity to provide high-caliber music instruction to their children.
